Gunmen attacked and killed 6 Nigerian army soldiers while they were patrolling in the northern Niger state on April 19.
This is another blow to the military, which is already facing challenges from armed criminal gangs in addition to fighting Islamist militants.
The soldiers were ambushed in a village called Karaga in Shiroro local government area.
This area is often targeted by armed gangs, locally known as bandits.
The soldiers were chasing the gunmen, who had fled after some of their gang members were killed.
Their equipment was also seized by the soldiers, said Nigerian Army spokesperson.
