A 12-year-old hippo named Gen-Chan in Japan Zoo was thought to be a male for seven years.
Everyone was shocked when they found out a hippo is actually a female.
Gen-chan came to Osaka Tennoji Zoo in 2017 from the Africam Safari animal park in Mexico, where they said she was a male.
The zookeepers were confused because the hippo didn’t behave like a typical male hippo.
Gen-chan was different from other male hippos.
She didn’t spread poop to mark her territory like they usually do.
She also didn’t make special calls to female hippos.
Zookeepers couldn’t see any male parts because hippos can be dangerous to get close to.
So they did a DNA test, and it confirmed she is a female.
The zoo promises to give her the best care and make sure she is happy and comfortable.
